Gifts to the Poor

Many of us experience a little tug on our hearts to help those less fortunate than us.   Particularly during the holiday season, our hearts are open.  After all, the bible says that whatever we do for the “least of these”’ we do for God himself (Matthew 25:40).   We wonder how we should help – we wonder about gifts to the poor.

Usually, our focus goes to material things – money, food donations, and even toys for poor kids.  But why is that?  The most impactful gift to the poor is our time and ability.   We should share our enthusiasm and know-how.   We should share our friendship –  that is the greatest gift of all.  It is what is missing in the war on poverty.    Government welfare programs focus on material things.   So do most charities.    What is missing in the war on poverty is the personal touch to help the poor help themselves.

After all, in addition to material support to the poor, the bible also calls for hard work, fighting sloth, and gaining personal responsibility.

  • “Six days you shall labor…” (Exodus 20:9)
  • A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” (Proverbs 10:4)
  • “For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies.  Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.” (2 Thessalonians 3:11-12)

To be successful in life we all must work hard, make good decisions, and avoid bad habits.   We all battle that every day. So do the poor except that often they don’t have good role models or someone taking an interest in them and helping them.   How about making your gift to the poor to be that someone for them?   It is incredibly rewarding.
